Why We Love Linen

Why We Love Linen

There is no secret we love linen and talk about it often. It’s qualities environmentally and as an interior fabric simply make you want to surround yourself in it.

Let’s Talk Flax

Flax, the fibre that linen is made from, is one of the most natural and uncontaminated fibre crops available. Not only does this hardy fibre need nothing in terms of chemicals and irrigation to grow it returns nutrients to the ground as well. The whole flax plant is used so nothing goes to waste and very little energy is required to process the fibre. It is biodegradable and recyclable into paper and insulation materials.

It uses 5-20 x less water in its production than cotton and synthetics. Flax is one of the few plant species that is capable of producing truly blue flowers.

Lets Talk Linen Fabric

Linen is durable and strong and has been around since Egyptian times, being used to wrap mummies, which when discovered, the linen was still intact. The spectacular durability and long life is due to its tensile strength, which is twice as high as that of cotton and three times that of wool.

Its use as an interior fabric for curtaining and upholstery is beneficial because of:

• Its air permeability

• It’s heat conductivity

• It’s excellent filtering against:

     • Chemical mediums

     • Noise

     • Dust

• It’s anti-bacterial properties

• The silica present in the fibre, which protects it against rotting

• Virtually lint free

• It’s non-static

• It’s non-allergenic

• It’s a natural insect repellent

• It provides UV protection.

It is highly absorbent, up to 20% of its own weight in moisture, which lends itself to being a great temperature regulator in an interior setting and as clothing next to your skin. It is stronger wet than dry so can be washed and dry-cleaned and thus dyes beautifully.

The beautiful long silky fibre gives linen curtaining the beautiful weight, lustre, durability and drape is what separates it and makes it a premium option for curtaining and upholstery.

Wondrous wide-width linen

Wondrous wide-width linen

If you are looking for smart, timeless and seam-free curtaining options then wide width linens are a great option. At Martha's we offer a beautiful range of 100% Belgian Linen wide width fabrics at great prices. We explore the natural quality of linen with airy, minimalist, light-filtering gauzes, traditional plaids and florals to Hamptons stripes and neutrals - there is something for every interior.

Practical and economical, with no need for joining drops or for pattern matching, wide-width fabric lends itself to large windows in width and height and perfectly suit wide blinds and room dividers.

We have linens in lighter weights for duvets and bedding and linens in heavier weights which are superb for seamless bedheads.

By railroading the direction of the fabric or using the length of the fabric as the drop, you are able to create a vertical stripe curtain or a horizontal stripe curtain, giving you the choice of style and creating different dimension to a window and room.

The widths of our linens range from 180cm all the way up to 300cm wide, giving you great options to play with.

The use of conventional polyester and cotton lining behind your linen curtains will preserve the colour and longevity of your curtains for years of service. Check out our blog post on linings for information on what type is lining is best for your room!

Wool furnishing fabrics can help a room to breathe!

Wool furnishing fabrics can help a room to breathe!

That’s right – wool can actually help to clean the air in your home, absorbing toxins that come from air particles and products such as car exhausts; paints, varnishes, cleaning products and aerosol sprays. Wool can absorb these toxins into it’s fibers and what’s even more amazing is that wool holds these toxins in it’s structure and they cannot diffuse back out, they are bound chemically and so the dangerous side effects are eliminated. This relatively new discovery is sending shock-waves through the scientific community – this amazing natural fiber can perform in ways that we’ve been trying to mirror with man- made products for decades, the answer was sitting quietly out on the local farm. Choose wool for your home and live a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Saying a fabric is suitable for outdoors, what does that really mean?

Saying a fabric is suitable for outdoors, what does that really mean?

Here at Martha’s it means that the fabric is more durable to withstand New Zealand’s climatic conditions, in particular exposure to harsh sunlight. All of Martha’s fabrics that are identified as ‘Outdoors’ are either Acrylic or Polypropylene fabrics, as the fibres do not breakdown easily when exposed to long periods of sunlight. These fabrics are also more resistant to fading and engineered to withstand the sun, salt and wind of summer living. Vibrant and stylish these outdoor fabrics are a perfect addition to any outdoor lounge, pool or BBQ area.

Why we love recovering; recycling and re-using sofas and chairs!

Why we love recovering; recycling and re-using sofas and chairs!

Here at Martha’s we love nothing more than seeing an old piece of furniture being bought back to life – celebrating all the character and history that has gone before and reinventing the piece to make it a fashionable addition to your home. The environmental benefits are obvious. Upcycling, recovering and reusing pre-loved furniture prevents furniture that has good bones (timber and construction), and is well designed from being discarded and becoming land fill. Another just as rewarding reason to recover that family heirloom or treasure that you find, is that it has a story (Oh that’s great uncle Fred’s chair) and a unique style and it will be a truly original piece as opposed to the mass produced look-a-likes that are everywhere today. The number one thing to consider consider when looking for an upholstery fabric is who is going to use it? and how often? If you are looking to recover a chair that will sit in the family TV room and be used everyday you need to look for a stronger fabric than you would need if you were covering a bedroom chair in a quest room that only gets occasional usage. If you have young children, you need to find a fabric that will not show every speak that is dropped on it and that is easy to spot clean. Also will pets being using this furniture too? If so you need to look for a tight woven fabric as it is easier to vacuum the animal fur off and cats are less likely to snag it. When it comes to colour, texture and patterns the world is your oyster so to speak. Our 2016 range at Martha’s is our most exciting and diverse range to-date. It is always best to order a fabric sample first and look at in conjunction with the piece of furniture you are recovering. Either visit us in store or on-line to receive your free samples

Double the delight – with linen gauze curtains!

Double the delight – with linen gauze curtains!

Most likely when you hear the words sheer curtains images of Grannies net curtains at the kitchen window come to mind. But sheer curtains have come along way from those days and are available in natural, desirable fabrics such as gauze linens.

The most well-known hanging option when using a fabric such as a sheer gauze linen is to use a double track system that hangs the drapes on the front track with your sheer linen gauze curtain sitting on the track behind. This combination allows for beautiful filtered light, whilst still framing the window either side, with either a plain or patterned fabric.

During the day you can have your gauze linen as you feature fabric pulled for privacy and then at night your main fabric adds warmth and darkness to your room.

Another option, which is just as popular, is to use your sheer gauze linen as the feature fabric with a plain lining behind it.

When using this option, the soft effect of the sheer gauze linen is always the hero in the room and this effect can be attached by using a singular track.

This way your lining protects the sheer linen gauze from the sun.

Linen gauses can also be used as a decorative way to frame a window and look fantastic when combined with a roman blind.

By using a sheer linen gauze you can give a room a softer natural look, or use a metallic linen gauze and achieve a modern sophistication interior.

Local talent at Martha's - meet Mollyhawk design!

Local talent at Martha's - meet Mollyhawk design!

In such a small and tight-knit country, supporting local talent is what keeps our country running.

At Martha’s, local designers are not only our source of style, they’re also our greatest source of inspiration.
This week we’re super excited to shine the spotlight on Kiwi design genius Mollyhawk! This brilliant brand will be in our Newmarket store from 8th July to the 30th of July. Spearheaded by Miranda Hurley, this family business fuses the classic with the courageous.

Hailing from Taranaki, Miranda’s designs have a distinct influence from nature, but it’s the illustrations of people that really stand Mollyhawk apart from other textile designers. Every Mollyhawk piece is handcrafted by their team, and are beautifully illustrated to create the feeling of the raw, living and earthy nature of the subjects. Mollyhawk’s cushions prove that art isn’t just for hanging on your walls – it’s just as beautiful fluffed up and sitting on your couch. If you’re thinking of being a little more daring with your style choices, or beautifully unique cushions are your thing, then we highly recommend getting your hands on these one of a kind pieces!

Where to draw the line on curtains

Where to draw the line on curtains

With more than 600 different curtain fabrics in-stock Martha’s has a fabric for every window.

Curtains make a huge difference to the appearance of any room as well as significantly increasing insulation and protecting against heat loss.

Discuss your window measurements with our friendly and knowledgeable team at Martha’s. We can calculate your fabric requirements and recommend a number of fantastic curtain makers who offer a very professional and affordable service.

Here are some things to consider with curtains and care advice:

· Selecting Fabric - Before you buy your curtain or blind fabric, it is always best to order a fabric sample. This allows you to see the fabric in your home and also to feel the material before you make a decision.

· Measuring your windows - Always measure your windows with a metal ruler or tape. Measure once, write down amount, then measure again to be sure.

· Maximising your view - By extending the Curtain Track either side of the window, when the Curtain is open it will stack onto the wall and not encroach over the window maximising natural light and your view.

Colour fastness and fading – No fabric is 100% colour fast, especially with the harsh and intense sun that we have here in New Zealand. The best way to protect your curtains is to line them. Adding lining to the back of your curtains creates a barrier between the sun and the back of your fabric, check out our blog “Benefits of lining your curtains” below to understand lining options.. Another great idea is to swap your curtains over from one side of the track to the other every so often, so that exposure is even.

Behind Every Curtain is a good lining!

Behind Every Curtain is a good lining!

Benefits of lining your curtains

  • Linings help your window furnishings last longer. With a good quality lining, your chosen curtain fabric is shielded from the harsh UV rays of the sun, helping to prevent your fabric from fading.
  • Linings provide added privacy. A lot of fabrics are only somewhat private, especially at night. Adding a lining to your window furnishings will increase the opacity of the treatment, ensuring complete privacy.
  • Linings provide increased insulation. Insulated linings trap air in and between the layers of fabric, preventing the heat in your homes escaping out the windows, and offering significant savings on your energy bill.
  • Linings can provide light control. Ideal for bedrooms and media rooms, block-out linings allows you to block light coming through a window and keep your rooms dark in the middle of the day.

How do I choose the most suitable lining for my home?

Polycotton lining A plain weave polyester/cotton lining, often used with fabric that requires added fullness and to improve the drape of the curtain. This does not block out any light, but has insulation and energy saving properties.

Thermal lining Features a single layer of Supersoft Suede coating and will produce a soft, filtered light for areas that do not require total light control. This lining blocks out 45% of light and has insulation and energy saving properties.

Blackout lining Features multiple layers of Supersoft Suede coating and is essential when total light control is required. This lining blocks out 99% of light and has insulation, energy saving and sound reduction properties.

Caring for your lining

  • Regular care will minimise the need for additional cleaning. Always exercise caution when spot cleaning – test on a non exposed surface.
  • To extend the life of your linings, regularly vacuum with appropriate attachment and air your curtains. All our linings can be professionally washed or dry cleaned.
  • For all coated fabrics, professional cleaning is recommended. If you are cleaning yourself hand wash in cool to warm water. Mild detergents recommended.
  •  Do not bleach or soak, rub or wring. Drip dry in shade and hang curtains by their hooks to avoid sides touching – do not use pegs.
  •  Warm iron on fabric side only. Bumph linings are dry clean only.

Woolly about Winter!

Woolly about Winter!

We don’t always think seasonally here at Martha’s, but with the weather cooling down a bit we thought it was a great time to talk about a local favourite– wool! We love that our range of wools are proudly New Zealand Made, eco-friendly and sustainable. Wool is a great, versatile fabric that is perfect for both the cooler and warmer months. With its low thermal conductivity, wool has the sensation of warmth in cold temperatures and coolness in hotter temperatures. Making it seasonally versatile and always comfortable. Wool is also extremely hard wearing and not easily crushed or flattened due to its springy fibres. This means it has excellent appearance retention. Looking great even after years of use. Incorporating wool into your furnishing adds instant warmth and optimum snuggle factor! We are obsessed with its texture and inspired by the endless opportunities to use it in our homes. Not only it is fabulous for upholstery and curtaining but it makes up beautifully for cushions, beanbags, headboards and throws.. be inspired by our range of NZ wools on our website Or if you’re looking for more information on how wool can help our planet, and your home, check out The Campaign for Wool’s website

Plush life - Appreciating and caring for your velvet

Plush life - Appreciating and caring for your velvet

Here at Martha's we are huge fans of velvet.

Its luxurious plushness adds a touch of class and indulgence to any home and works wonderfully for upholstery and lush, full drapes. Our main line of velvet at Martha's is J.B. Martin, and if you've watched their clip on the velvet-making process you'll see exactly why we like them so much!

It's clear that the team at J.B. Martin are passionate about velvet, and pride themselves in making a masterpiece fabric.

It is this care that goes into making the fabric that you should also put in to protect it long term.

We've compiled a list of tips for you to think about when caring for your velvet before and after it's been made into its beautiful final product!

Before:

• We recommend you always store your velvet rolled onto the core it was given to you on - please do not fold your velvet!

• If possible, suspend your velvet - or keep it laying on a flat, even surface, never standing it on end.

• We also recommend you avoid sitting anything on top of or pushing into the velvet, which may cause irregular bruising to the pile.

• Finally, we advise you make your final product with haste, so as to avoid any of the above.

After:

Acquiring a speccial nozzle for your vacuum for velvet can aid greatly in protecting the pile as you can clean fuzz off your upholstery or drapes.

• For any spills, make sure you never rub or dab the fabric, simply take an absorbent cloth or paper towel, and leave it in place as it absorbs - then leave it to air dry.

• Professional upholstery and curtain cleaning is recommended for all fabrics.

We hope you love and appreciate all of velvet's opulence and grandeur as much as we do!

Straight Down The Line With Stripes

Straight Down The Line With Stripes

Stripes are a firm favorite here at Martha’s! We love the way stripes can be used in a contemporary; classic or French country decor. Stripes are timeless and very versatile. They can be used to create their own statement or provide a base upon which to layer patterns and colours – it all depends on the scale of the stripe and the effect you want to achieve.

One of our all time favorite stripes is the classic ticking stripe, which looks fantastic at the window as a roman blind or curtains, or even as a lining option with the stripe facing out to the window. Ticking is also an ideal option for upholstery. Stripes can give an illusion of height or width. Vertical stripes can make a window appear taller, while horizontal stripes can make a window and the room seem wider!

Take a look at our wonderful stripes here!

Local artist Andrew Steel in store at Martha's

Local artist Andrew Steel in store at Martha's

Here at Martha’s we’re lucky enough to have Kiwi local and international street artist Andrew J Steel in our Newmarket store this Wednesday and Thursday (20th-21st April) to create an exciting new Andrew Steel original interior mural artwork.

This piece is exciting for us because it’s going to be a key feature in store that draws on the unique Martha’s style. We really want our walls to be as creative as the unique fabrics we stock – and choosing local genius Andrew Steel was a no brainer!

Andrew’s quirky, cartoonish style can be seen all around New Zealand, and internationally in places like Melbourne, and it’s not hard to see why he’s so popular –just take a look at some of his iconic pieces.

The New Plymouth local has been making waves in the street art and interior mural world, and even spruced up the I Love Ugly headquarters – a team we’re lucky enough be fabric stockists for!

It almost seems like teaming up with Andrew was fate, and we can’t wait to see the ways he incorporates the Martha’s style into his fun pieces – and we thought you might be too! We know it’s school holidays, so if you or your artsy kids want to see Andrew’s talent live in action then come down to our Newmarket store over the next two days and check it out!

Linen Curtaining

Linen Curtaining

Here at Martha’s we have been asked a lot lately about linen as a curtaining choice, which is a summer favourite due to its light, natural look and feel.

If you are considering linen, here is some information we believe will be helpful!

Firstly linen fabrics are a beautiful choice if you are looking to introduce natural textures and timeless elegance into your home.

Not only do linen curtains look great, but they are also a great conductor of heat and will keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Linen is lovely to live with and being a natural product it won’t cause irritations or allergies when used in your home.

The production of linen has minimum impact on the environment. The flax plant that linen is made from requires little to no chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

At Martha’s we have a wide selection of linens that are perfect for curtains. Everything from iridescent gauzes through to classic textured linens.

Our most popular fabric at Martha’s right now is our pre-washed and dyed vintage linens – perfect for the quintessential shabby chic look; a romantic ethereal feel or a contemporary style; or maybe creating a timeless country look.

Allowing linen curtains to flow onto the floor (which is called puddling), is not only a fantastic look but also helps with insulation and noise control from outside environments.

What about fading, you say? Well, in New Zealand and Australia the sun is very harsh - not only on our skin but also on our furnishings.

So linen, just like every other fabric will be effected over time by the harsh sun. Lining your curtains helps to minimize fading. We recommend installing double tracks as this allows for the best of both worlds, achieving filtered light but also having protection and insulation.

Linen provides a gentle touch of style to any room and is a fantastic curtaining choice.

We love the warmth and glamour that honey and tan furnishings bring to a room. These tones work exceptionally well with browns black and white. Combine them with interesting textures to change the atmosphere of your room; using glass, gilt and bold graphic prints for a formal stately look, or bare wood, leather and antique rugs for a casual rustic feel.

Outdoor Beauties!

Outdoor Beauties!

Did you love the glorious sun over the weekend!?
We sure did, but it forced us to take a good hard look at the state of our outdoor furniture. After, lets be honest, more than one winter of neglect our outdoor upholstery is in desperate need of some love and attention! With plenty of how to guides online we are going to attempt a DIY recovery job…
Luckily we have a wide range of acrylic based fabrics perfect for the job. Strong, bold colours and patterns are perfect for outdoor use. They look bright and lively in the harsh sun and create a fun atmosphere for outdoor socialising.

Plush Blue

Plush Blue

Blue sofas are all the rage!
We are seeing them everywhere, particularly in gorgeous plush velvet!
Wonderfully versatile, velvet can create either a formal or casual atmosphere. No longer the preserve of the classical or traditional home these strong indigo and cyan tones bring a vibrant contemporary edge to the living rooms above.

Line your Nest

New bed linen!!!
It is such a luxury to treat yourself to new bed linen and spring is the perfect time to do it. There seems to be a proliferation of geometric prints adorning bedroom accessories and linens at the moment, we say bring it on!
Kip and Co, a Melbourne based company stocked throughout New Zealand, offer some particularly fine examples of duvet and sheet sets. Or why not try making your own…?

Wabi Sabi

Wabi Sabi

Relaxed living!

It’s no secret that we adore the casual and beautifully textured look of linen. Just like our shoes, we prefer our homes to look lived in and we celebrate the patina of age! The Japanese call this gorgeous aesthetic ‘Wabi Sabi’.
You can lighten up this earthy look by combining ash and bark tones with duck egg blue and sage green. We drew these colours out of the amazingly weathered concrete wall in the top right image, so beautiful!

Beautiful Blossoms

Beautiful Blossoms

We love this time of year!!

The sight of fallen blossoms carpeting the streets and parks has inspired us to seek out some delicate florals. One of our new prints, Celebration, is a floral stunner. It has already been whipped up into a handy tote bag by one staff member. We think it would make the perfect acessory for this divine floral dress by local designer Ingrid Starnes!

Mustard and Monochrome

Mustard and Monochrome

Black & White meets Mustard!
We love seeing monochrome palettes brought to life with powerful injections of colour. The use of pumpkin toned mustard throws, cushions and artworks in several of the interiors above is just divine.

This restrained use of colour allows you to mix differently sized patterns, in wallpaper bed linen and cushions, to great effect. We think these black and white utility baskets would make great storage containers for all our pens, pencils sewing pins and other random bits and bobs at Martha’s!

Draught Stoppers

Draught Stoppers

Spring has arrived but the cold winds linger!!!

We had several customers buying fabric for draught stoppers over the weekend, so we know some of you are still felling the chill. There are so many ways to make these snazzy additions to your home; crocheted, knitted, even sewn from socks!! After some hunting around we have found two easy to follow sewing guides and what better to cover them with than some jazzy animal print!?
During our search we came across the suggestion to include some fragrant lavender in your filling, how lovely!

These gentle colours are an excellent choice when building an interior palette. You could use furnishings, paint colours, furniture, clothing or artwork to bring these soothing colours into your life. The dreamy interiors above are fantastic examples of how to use pastels to maximum effect.

The pastel tones which sit towards the neon end of the spectrum are excellent for creating a vibrant modern scheme. Think of using small bight flashes of yellow and lime to bring the first hints of spring into your home.

Some beautiful magnolias to brighten up your Monday!
We are loving watching these trees as they come into flower around Auckland this month.
Their branches, buds and blooms have been inspiring artists and designers for centuries, especially Japanese painters and printmakers of the Edo period. We couldn’t resist sharing just a few of our many fabrics which feature flowering branch motifs. Our Magnolia and Scarlett fabrics are absolute favourites!
